This study presents findings on the challenges and opportunities of strengthening the linkages between carbon markets and climate finance on the African continent. It analyzes the role of carbon and climate finance in the context of needed investments in energy access, as well as how to best leverage the synergistic potential of both instruments. The focus is on addressing the electricity supply gap of rural areas through off-grid energy sources, which, due to high costs, demonstrate a broad demand for large-scale investments in renewable energy. Expanding renewable energy structures would strengthen countries' ambitions to achieve their NDCs and could offer potential for societal change in addition to mitigation potential (SDG1, SDG3, SDG4).
