10 new Air Conditioners (ACs) are being sold every second for the next 30 years. If not addressed, energy demand from ACs will more than triple by 2050, equal to China’s electricity demand today (IEA 2018). Split ACs represent the largest growing sub-sector. At the same time, they are responsible for the largest share of energy, of HCFC and HFC consumption and therefore of CO2-eq emissions. This Side Event will present and discuss how to leapfrog to highly efficient AC units that compared to conventional ACs use natural refrigerants and have ultra-low GWP and do not contain PFAS or break down to TFA (“Green” ACs). “Green” ACs exist but are introduced only slowly. However, the world would benefit from their spread as they have a huge mitigation potential at very low costs. It is estimated that “Green” ACs could reduce global warming by over 0.1 degrees Celsius. Incentivising stakeholders with sustainable financing instruments which considers either climate or carbon finance (Article 6) under the Paris Agreement can accelerate the market introduction of “Green” ACs. Apart from the global mitigation potential of “Green” split ACs, project examples from different countries will demonstrate specific actions already underway.
