High-integrity carbon markets depend on credible validation and verification. Yet Africa faces a shortage of domestic Validation and Verification Bodies, contributing to project delays, higher transaction costs, and limited local value creation.
Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, through its Global Carbon Market Project, supported the publication of Pathways for Strengthening Validation and Verification Body Capacity in Africa, developed by Perspectives Climate Group and jointly commissioned with the Voluntary Carbon Markets Integrity Initiative.
The report outlines practical actions to strengthen accreditation systems, expand the VVB workforce, mobilise financing, and integrate digital MRV systems. Building local verification capacity is essential to improve market integrity, reduce dependency on external providers, and enable African countries to participate competitively in global carbon markets.
