Market-based climate change instruments are still being discussed as a key component of a future climate change agreement. At the same time, however, the global carbon market is in crisis. Against this background, the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety (BMUB) funds a range of research projects, some of which are presented in this brochure. Two of the projects presented focus on the immediate impact should the international carbon market collapse. Four further projects look at the further development of the market-based approach. Despite their differing research focus, these projects have a common goal: securing the expected climate change mitigation effects despite the unexpected difficulties seen on the carbon market.
