Joint side event by VCMI and Wuppertal Institute at the Innovate for Climate (I4C) 2023
Voluntary Carbon Markets (VCMs) are poised to grow exponentially as companies set net zero commitments. This brings opportunities for increasing finance for climate change mitigation on one hand, and risks of greenwashing, social and environmental harms on the other. The event will convene representatives from government, private sector and civil society to address the central question: “What is the role of governments to provide the enabling environment for high integrity VCMs?”
By unpacking different perspectives on this question – from supply and demand sides of VCMs – the discussion will identify the opportunities, and the need for, government engagement and public policy to underpin high-integrity in VCMs. It will also showcase VCMI’s Access Strategy Toolkit as a key resource for countries as they consider how to engage with VCMs to and channel carbon finance into their national climate, economic and social prosperity plans.
