Through a public tender, the German Federal Government is seeking emission reduction credits by November 4, 2025, to offset greenhouse gas emissions generated from official travel and other related activities.
Since the 18th legislative period (2014–2017), the Federal Government has been offsetting the climate impact of official travel, transportation, and events undertaken by the federal administration through the purchase of emission reduction credits. The compensation primarily covers the climate impact of all official trips and journeys taken by employees of the supreme and higher federal authorities, as well as directly subordinate agencies, using airplanes or government vehicles.
The goal of this compensation measure is to neutralize the climate impact of these emissions by supporting emission reductions elsewhere. In doing so, the Federal Government makes an additional contribution to climate protection, fulfills its exemplary role in promoting active climate action, and sends a strong signal in support of the voluntary carbon market.
The offsetting of these activities is to be carried out using high-quality emission reduction credits from particularly qualified climate protection projects, based on emission reductions achieved after December 31, 2020. Since such credits cannot yet be presented, they will be submitted at a later stage.
The projects must be registered under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) or classified as temporary measures by the CDM Executive Board (CDM EB), and must have applied for transition under Article 6.4 of the Paris Agreement with the UNFCCC. To offset all related emissions, the German Environment Agency (UBA) intends to purchase up to 795,408 emission reduction credits.
